The March 6th Patch included the first wave of content for the Naval Strike DLC in the shape of 5 new weapons and two new soldier gadgets.
Below are all the guns and gadgets as well as information on the upcoming Carrier Assault mode.
The all-new AR160 shares similar stats to the majority of Assault Rifles already in the game firing 5.56mm NATO at around 700 Rounds per Minute but the advantage of the AR160 is it’s medium range capability.
As the Assignment name would suggest, this is designed for slightly longer engagements though that’s not to say it’s incapable holding it’s own in close quarters, it most certainly can.
The AWS is the new heavy hitter for Battlefield 4. Based on the Ares Shrike, it combines a devastating 800 Round per Minute fire rate with a rapid reload rate thanks to it’s 100 round Beta C-Mag. It’s also highly accurate thanks to it’s low recoil 5.56mm NATO chambering and clear iron sights.
This beast has advantages over almost every other LMG in the game and is already being called Over Powered by many. Nerf Inbound!
The new addition to the almost never used PDW family is the SR-2. Whilst I’m yet to unlock and use it, Symthic suggests it has a uniquely high damage profile among the PDWs which is balanced by a slow muzzle velocity and the gun being wildly inaccurate.
I’ll update once I’ve unlocked it and tried it for myself.
The SW40 is based on the Italian Chiappa Rhino and it certainly lives up to it’s name. Chambered for .357 Magnum, it feels like the REX of BF3; very powerful and not particularly accurate but capable for handling it’s self well at close range. Unlike the other Revolvers in Battlefield 4, there’s no fire delay meaning you can unload all 6 rounds in quick succession.
The SRR338, the new long rifle coming with Naval Strike is unique among it’s Sniper-Only siblings in that it’s semi-automatic allowing for quick follow up shots – essential for taking people off the back of fast moving boats.
To balance out it’s rapid fire ability and .338 stopping power, it’s been given a wild bullet spread if fired too quickly. A fair trade off but I suspect we’ll be seeing a lot of these beasts equipped with ACOG scopes in an Aggressive Recon role.
The SR338 requires 5 kills with C4 on the new, unreleased Naval Strike maps but I have messed around with it on an unranked, all unlocks server and I can confirm spamming it does transform it into an AA gun. Timing your shots with this will be essential – A steady fire rate will let you land every shot on the exact same point, fire before the gun reseats itself and at 400 meters, you’ll be off by 20.
Naval Strike also see’s the introduction of two new Soldier Gadgets.
The Metal Storm 3GL is a 3 round magazine fed grenade launcher, which despite spamming relentlessly on Operation Metro, I’m yet to get a kill with. It fires slightly smaller and less powerful 40mm grenades than it’s conventional M320 HE brethren but allows rapid follow up shots, allowing you to suppress enemy positions with ease. Like the SRR338 sniper rifle, firing too fast means the rounds will go miles over your target so timing is key.
I have to say, I’d love to see a smoke variant of this for Rush and Defuse.
These little beauties are the new AA Mines. When they were announced, a lot of people complained that they were just another way to take down helicopters but it couldn’t be further from the truth.
These are very much area denial weapons. Once placed, they’re completely automated, one shot only, have a very small radius in which they’ll lock onto enemy air vehicles and do very little damage – 30% on Jets and Scout/Attack Helicopters and 20% damage on Transport helicopters.
Two can be placed at the same time but it’s better to place them quite a distance apart from each other so they aren’t both fired and fooled by counter measures at once.
These will be really useful for defending the Missile Battery points on Carrier Assault.
Whilst not visible on Battlelog, most are already available to unlock with the exception of the SRR338 which requires the Naval Strike maps. The new assignments, weapons and dogtags will be included in Tuesday 11th Battlelog update –
The patch for consoles also included a video tutorial on how Carrier Assault mode works. Here it is courtesy of JPGameTube –
